An Interview with Fashion Youtuber's Heather and Dave Trimble
I got to interview my favorite couple on Youtube !!!!
I stumbled upon Dave and Heather’s Youtube channel back in July. As soon as their video FUN THRIFT DAY showed up on my Youtube recommendations I knew the algorithm had finally cooked up something worth eating, if you catch my drift. What I love most about Dave and Heather is their ability to create captivating fashion and thrift videos that feel unplagued by the trend cycle. That isn’t to say they aren’t fashionable, or even unaffected by what is considered cool in the here and now. They just do it in a way that feels true to themselves. Their videos feel like a blast to the past, where people cared less about having the perfect camera and editing software, and more focused on creating interesting content. Their focus on upcycling leaves me feeling inspired and creative. I love all of their projects which push their viewers to look at clothes differently, as potential art rather than disposable pieces of planned obsolesce. I reached out to the two of them to ask them more about their own personal styles and what fashion means to them. I hope you enjoy. Thank you again Heather and Dave for taking time and energy out of your day to do this interview!
Could you two introduce yourselves and how you decided to make a Youtube channel?
My name is Heather Trimble. I am a registered nurse. On my time off I love thrifting, upcycling...among many other hobbies... with my family.
My name is David Trimble. I have spent most of my life creating exciting collaborative programs for all ages...bringing people together in a fun-filled art centered social environment...promoting our overall well-being and the power of cooperation.
During the pandemic Dave and I started watching many inspirational travel and fashion videos on YouTube. We decided to create our own channel to encourage people of all ages to thrift, upcycle...and wear what makes you feel good. I am somewhat a shy person...so the YouTube platform gave me the opportunity to express myself and encourage others in a way that I haven't always done in person.
How would you describe your style evolution? How would you describe your style?
Heather: Over the years I have kept experimenting with different looks. This process has geared me to focus on what I like...rather than current trends( unless the current trend is something I like)..
Dave: I have always appreciated a wide range of fashion styles. I am one who rarely memorizes names..yet will remember an interesting look. In many ways...my evolution of style has not changed...although my understanding of color, form and movement has morphed greatly.
What style advice would you give to the reader?
Heather: Listen to yourself. If you like it and you feel good in it...wear it.
Dave: You do not need to be a professional seamstress or artist to be able to create your own identity through fashion.
How did you guys get into thrifting?
Heather: Dave got me into thrifting when we first met in 2003. We did it first for financial reasons and realized how much fun it was to thrift together.
Dave: I started thrifting for whatever I could find in fashion and elsewhere in the 1980's...as I had the opportunity to collaborate design sets for our school proms. The thrifted items that were upcycled created a mesmerizing experience. Imagine walking down a flight of stairs where you enter your prom crossing a pond with birds chirping and thirty foot palm trees blowing...now entering the school through a gazebo backed with a hill of vibrant flowers. The lights dim as you are intissed towards a once called 'gymnasium"...now the cooperative creation inspired by dozens of students...an " enchantment under the sea". The bleachers were lined with bamboo fencing separating the feel of land from the ocean with tropical animals everywhere. Palm trees lined the walls and the tables throughout the room made one feel like they were in the water. The stage hosted a fifty foot castle...that appeared to be under water as it swade. The lighting created a mood to feel as the night was ticking by. This experience was the beginning of my thrifting days.
Who and what are your style influences? I know you talk a lot about Vivienne Westwood on your Youtube channel.
Heather: My earliest influencers were my mother and grandmothers, all of whom loved fashion. I have several influencers today. I feel I gain inspiration from such a wide range of people. For just a small example...THE WAY WE WORE, BJONESSTYLE, KATHLEEN ILLUSTRATED, GRECE GHANEM, ELISE BUCH...A WIDE RANGE OF RUNWAY SHOWS eg. ELIE SAAB, on YouTube: tmyers handmade, BlueprintDIY, Abundantly Inspired, Prickly Alpaca, The DIY Designer, Gucci fashion shows and Pinterest.
Dave: I found a book from the 1920's. It was a visual documentation of unknown artists from the 1700's to early 1900's. The images reminded me that incredible designs can be created by anyone. My influencers are wide-ranging...and may remain unknown.
How do you guys inspire each others style?
Heather: Sharing ideas and collaborating.
Dave: Heather said it all!
What's your favorite thing in your closet?
Heather: I feel like I could break this question down into categories...favorite loungewear, favorite dress wear, favorite nostalgic...the list goes on ( LOL ). My most favorite is to be sparkly.
Dave: I do not have a favorite item in my wardrobe. Each day I just wear what I feel.
What's the oldest thing in your closet?
Heather: A brown velvet hat with no name...but looks like it could be from the late 1800's to early 1900's....or it could be a Scottish sheepskin coat Dave gifted me when we first met.
Dave: Possibly a german lambskin coat.
What are you most inspired by right now?
Heather & Dave: We are currently inspired through connecting the people on YouTube...sharing ideas and love.
I see in alot of your videos you show us upcycled fashion that you have made yourself. How do you find motivation and time to stay on top of your project pile?
Heather: I don't. I do have a large pile( LOL ). When I get time off...I enjoy tackling my pile. It is great therapy.
Dave: I have had a great deal of time management practice...so the pile is smaller. It took a very long time to gain this skill.
Another thank you to Heather and Dave for answering my questions, you guys are both so sweet and I love your channel and continue to feel inspired by it <3 For all you out there who havent checked out their Youtube channel you can do so here!
